March Snow on Biscay Pond, Maine oil painting by artist Elizabeth Reed
Snow on Biscay Pond
Oil on Board

March 2023

Snow on Biscay Pond is winter. Painted en Plein air (from inside!) March 2023 produced two major snowstorms in mid-coast Maine. Generators were humming, and fireplaces were cranking.

It was snowing heavily when I started this painting. The boughs of the pine trees quickly became heavy with the beautiful neutrals. Slowly, the snow started falling in clumps off the boughs. The light turned as cool as the air. Biscay Pond disappeared in the distance and then became a mirror. Ah, the hibernation of winter.

This painting records the feeling of winter. Its cool grandeur would translate well into a large-scale painting.
